charming houses
made in native
materials.

At 18 km, we
stop in Chucuito,
that means “the
golden hill” in
aymara language,
where is
possible to see
the remains of
the Inka Uyo,
the temple to
the fertility,
that is also an
astronomic
observatory.
During the
spanish colonial
time, Chucuito
was founded as
the Royal
Coffers place,
and buillldings
of that epoque
are still there,
such as the
great churches
founded by
Dominicans.
Continuing by
the way, we pass
by Acora, famous
town which once
a week there is
a very typical
market in, and
there are as
well some
remains of
chullpas near
to.
Then, going by
the route, at 70
km from Puno,
near Ilave, we
find a very
special rock
place, called
“Ajayumarka”
(city of
spirits), where
is the
Aramumuru’s
Gate, misterious
relief on a big
flat rock which
they tell a lot
of incredible
stories about
Continuing, we
arrive to Juli,
“Rome of Indias”,
charming point
in the border of
the lake, where
Dominicans and
Jesuists founded
the construction
of hutch
churches, and
made the site
prosper and rich
in their
tentative to
doctrinate the
new populations
during the XVII
and XVIII
centuries.
Then, over the
100 km from
Puno, threre is
Pomata, one of
the nicest
points of the
route, where is
the “Temple in
rose” or the
Saint James
Temple, great
workmanship from
XVII century,
full of indian-baroque
style
decoration.
At 130 Km from
Puno, we are
passing Yunguyo,
at 130 km from
Puno. That is a
places where the
inhabitants have
preserved many
oral traditions
about the
Wiñaymarka Lake
and other miths.
There is a nice
view of the
Kapia volcano,
and, not far
from here, it is
Copacabana, the
first bolivian
town after
passing the
boundary.
Another way to
arrive to
Bolivia is
taking the
deviation to
Desaguadero to
cross the
bridge. Going to
there is
possible to see
the church of
Zepita in red
stone, and near
to Desaguadero
there are the
remains of Tanka
Tanka, an
arqueological
pre-incan site,
that belongs to
the great
kingdom of the
Lupakas.
